Irish govt misses 2024 social housing target by over 1,400 homes

Underlining Ireland’s prevalent housing crisis, the government missed its target for new build social homes in 2024, falling short by more than 1,400 homes, according to figures released today.

Under the Housing for All plan, the aim was to deliver 9,300 new social homes last year, but only 7,871 were completed. The total number of social homes provided—including new builds and acquisitions—reached 10,595, well below the overall target of 12,930.

Minister for Housing James Browne acknowledged the shortfall, attributing it in part to a slowdown in private sector construction, though he noted the impact was less severe than initially feared.

He urged local authorities to do everything possible to meet their targets for 2025.
