On the Dublin to Belfast line at Gormanston in Co. Meath yesterday night, two men were struck by a train, one of whom died and the other of whom was wounded.
The incident happened the 20.50 train leaving Connolly Station for Belfast at about 9.30 p.m.The two men were on the tracks near Gormanston station as the train approached.
The first victim, a man in his 20s, died as a result of his injuries, while the second victim, a man in his 30s, only suffered minor wounds.
The victim’s body has been taken to the mortuary at Navan Hospital.
The railway line was temporarily blocked following the incident, and the train stayed at the location until just after midnight, but when the first investigation was over, a full service was resumed this morning.
Gardaí at Ashbourne are investigating the incident, and Irish Rail will carry out a separate investigation into the circumstances around the fatality.
