The man reportedly fell from a boat in the bay off Kilorglin last evening, according to the Gardai. There were attempts to locate and save the man, but they failed. The incident took place in the Cromane fishing village not far from the well-known Jack’s Seafood restaurant.
A Garda spokesperson said: “At approximately 10 pm on Sunday, 17th July, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a man, aged in his 50s, got into difficulty in the water in Cromane Bay, Kilorglin, Co. Kerry.”
The man was taken to shore and pronounced dead at the scene at around 11 pm last night.
A post-mortem examination will be performed at Tralee General Hospital where his body has been taken.
Gardaí are not treating the incident as suspicious.
Mark Nolan, Youghal RNLI’s Deputy Launching Authority, said: ‘With the great warm weather we are currently enjoying it is tempting to go for a swim or engage in water activities, so we would urge people to remember to carry a means of communication so they can raise an alarm if they, or someone else, is in any danger.
“Even though the lifeboat was stood down twice today, we commend the people who raised the alarm.”
‘If you think you’re in trouble, or if you think you see someone else in trouble, in or near the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard because we would rather launch and be stood down than not launch at all,’he added.
