Met Éireann issues rain and wind warnings across multiple counties after cold snap

Flood risk and strong winds to follow Arctic conditions

Ireland is set to face heavy rain and strong winds following the recent cold spell, with Met Éireann issuing yellow weather warnings across multiple counties.

Yellow Rain Warning

A yellow rain warning has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, effective from 9pm tonight until 9pm on Sunday. Authorities warn that localized flooding is possible in these areas as heavy rainfall moves across the northwest and west of the country.

Residents in affected counties are advised to monitor conditions closely and take precautions to protect property from potential flood damage.

Yellow Wind Warning

Separately, a yellow wind warning has been issued for Clare, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo due to the forecast of strong and gusty winds. The warning came into effect at 6am on Sunday and will remain in place until 2pm.

Met Éireann cautions that the strong winds could cause trees to fall and objects to become airborne, creating hazardous conditions. Motorists are urged to exercise particular caution, especially on exposed routes and when passing high-sided vehicles.

After the Freeze

The warnings come as Ireland transitions from the recent severe cold snap that saw temperatures plummet to minus 3 degrees Celsius in parts of the country. The dramatic shift from icy conditions to wet and windy weather highlights the volatile nature of Ireland’s winter climate.

Safety Advice

Authorities are advising residents in affected areas to:

  • Secure outdoor furniture and objects that could be blown about
  • Avoid parking vehicles under trees
  • Exercise caution when traveling, particularly on coastal and exposed routes
  • Stay away from coastal areas during periods of high winds
  • Monitor local weather updates regularly
  • Be prepared for possible power outages due to falling trees or debris

The combination of saturated ground from heavy rainfall and strong winds increases the risk of tree falls, particularly as many trees still retain foliage from the mild autumn.

Local councils in affected counties have been placed on alert and are monitoring conditions to respond to any incidents of flooding or storm damage.
