Minister seeks new chair for higher education chief

The hunt is on for a new leader to oversee Ireland’s higher education sector. Minister Patrick O’Donovan has put out the call for a fresh face to chair the Higher Education Authority (HEA), the body responsible for keeping tabs on universities and colleges across the country.

This four-year role comes with some hefty responsibilities. The chosen candidate will be tasked with steering the HEA’s strategic direction, working hand-in-hand with the CEO to ensure taxpayers’ money is well-spent, and collaborating with the Minister to implement key priorities for higher education.

“We’re looking for someone who can drive excellence in our universities and colleges,” Minister O’Donovan explained. “The right person will play a crucial role in shaping the future of higher education in Ireland.”

Established in 1972, the HEA has evolved to become the primary funding authority and advisory body for higher education in Ireland. Its responsibilities now include overseeing institutions and ensuring the sector meets the needs of students and contributes to the country’s development.

Interested candidates have until October 18, 2024, to throw their hat in the ring. The position comes with an annual payment of €11,970, though public servants should note the “One Person One Salary” principle applies.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to lead Irish higher education into the future, now’s your chance to step up to the plate. The Minister and the HEA are waiting to hear from you.
