Nearly 500 carers receive state pension for the first time thanks to New Legislation

In a significant step forward for long-term carers, nearly 500 individuals have been awarded a State Pension for the first time under new legislation that took effect in January 2024. The law, introduced by Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys TD, allows carers who have dedicated over 20 years to looking after incapacitated individuals to receive pension contributions.

Since the implementation of this reform, 1,145 carers have been granted Long-Term Carers Contributions, with 474 of them, aged 66 and over, now receiving a State Pension for the first time. Additionally, 127 carers have been moved to a higher rate of payment due to this change.

Minister Humphreys highlighted the importance of supporting carers, particularly women, who often take time out of the workforce to care for loved ones. The Minister emphasized that this new measure ensures these carers are recognized for their invaluable contributions to society by securing their entitlement to the State Pension.

Carers who meet the criteria can apply for the Long-Term Carers Contributions online at MyWelfare.ie. The initiative is part of a broader effort by Minister Humphreys to enhance support for carers, which includes reforms to the Carers Allowance means test, increasing the Carer’s Support Grant, and prioritizing carers in cost-of-living payments.

This landmark reform is expected to continue benefiting more carers as they reach pension age, marking a crucial recognition of the vital role they play in society.
