Dublin: The government is cracking down on drivers who repeatedly renew their learner permits without obtaining a full license. Transport Minister Jack Chambers has instructed the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to take action against drivers who renew their learner permits three or more times without passing the driving test.
The new rule, expected to be implemented in the second half of the year, aims to reduce the number of long-term learner drivers on the road. Currently, around 30,000 learner drivers have been driving for years without taking the driving test.
Minister Chambers emphasized that before these measures take effect, there will be awareness campaigns through schools and media to inform the public. The government has allocated three million euros for these initiatives, which will also help secure additional funds for the RSA.
This move comes as part of a broader effort to improve road safety and ensure that all drivers on the road are properly licensed. The government hopes that by enforcing these restrictions, more learner drivers will be encouraged to take the necessary steps to obtain their full driving licenses.
