Nine Oscar nominations for Banshees of Inisherin as Irish talent shines

This year’s Academy Awards nominations showcased Irish talent, with 13 nominations across 11 categories.

In Banshees of Inisherin, which was also nominated for best original screenplay, best original score, best film editing, and the critically acclaimed best motion picture of the year, Colin Farrell received his first Oscar nomination for best actor.

In addition to Kerry Condon receiving a nomination for best actress in a supporting role, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan received nominations for best actor in a supporting role.

Paul Mescal, for his performance in Aftersun, joins Colin Farrell as a first-time nominee for best actor.

An Irish Goodbye is up for best live action short film, while the critically acclaimed An Cailn Ciin was nominated for best international feature film.

Richard Baneham, an Irishman, was also a member of the group nominated for Avatar: The Way of Water’s best visual effects.

Additionally, Martin McDonagh received a nomination for Banshees of Inisherin’s best direction, competing against Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans.
