Dublin Zoo has announced the passing of Betty, its 62-year-old chimpanzee, who was the oldest chimp in human care. Betty, who arrived at the zoo in 1964, was euthanized to prevent further age-related discomfort.
Betty’s long history at the zoo included participation in the now-discontinued “Chimp Tea Parties.” Dublin Zoo team leader Helen Clarke-Bennett, who has been at the zoo since 1987, recalled Betty as strong-minded and persistent. Betty was inseparable from another chimp, Wendy, until Wendy’s death in 2014.
Clarke-Bennett shared a cherished memory of Betty encouraging Wendy to join the troop outside. Betty’s remarkable life and personality left a lasting impression on those who cared for her.
