Status Orange ice warning issued for Ireland

As “severe” frost and icy stretches are about to arrive, Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for the entire country.

The notice is in effect starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday and lasts until 12 p.m. on Monday.

The forecaster said: “A severe frost and further icy stretches will set in on Sunday night, accompanied by patches of freezing fog. Temperatures likely to fall below -5 degrees in many areas.”

It comes after many areas of Cork experienced overnight lows of -5C, and more chills are predicted.

Since temperatures aren’t predicted to rise above 4C, today’s bitter start will “linger” throughout the day.

They said: “Very cold early this morning across Munster with frost, ice, and patches of freezing fog. These will linger in some areas today. Many areas will be mainly dry with some sunny spells. there’ll be a few wintry showers also, mainly in the west of the region. Highest temperatures of only 1 to 4 degrees, with light variable breezes.

“Tonight will be mainly dry, but very cold with widespread severe frost and with ice on roads and paths. Patches of freezing fog in many areas also. Lowest temperatures of -5 to 0 degrees with light northerly or variable breezes.

“Sunday will be another very cold day with temperatures of just 0 to 3 degrees. Frost and fog may linger in some places all day. It will be mainly dry with some sunshine. Winds will be light northerly or variable.”
