Storm Éowyn declared life-threatening: 130km/h winds to sweep across Ireland

The Chair of the National Emergency Coordination Group has warned that Storm Éowyn will bring severe and dangerous conditions, posing a significant risk to life and property.

Speaking during a briefing this afternoon, Keith Leonard described Éowyn as one of the most perilous storms Ireland has faced, with wind speeds expected to exceed 130km/h.

“We expect this storm to be disruptive, dangerous,” he was quoted as saying by RTE.

Met Éireann has issued several Status Red wind warnings covering the entire country, set to take effect in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The public is being urged to stay indoors, with officials cautioning that the storm’s impact could include structural damage, significant power outages, and widespread cancellations.

All critical infrastructure and essential services have been placed in emergency mode, and schools will remain closed for the entire day, even after the warnings expire.

Authorities are advising people not to travel during the warnings and to keep phones charged in case of emergencies. Met Éireann has reiterated that the storm poses a “danger to life.”
