Ireland cricket team began their T20 World Cup campaign with a defeat, losing by 20 runs to Sri Lanka cricket team in the opening Group B match played in Colombo on Tuesday.

After winning the toss, Ireland chose to bowl first. Sri Lanka posted a competitive 163 for 6 in their 20 overs. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with an unbeaten 56 off 43 balls, while Kamindu Mendis provided late momentum with 44 off just 19 balls. Opener Pathum Nissanka added 24 at the top. For Ireland, Barry McCarthy and George Dockrellclaimed two wickets each.
Chasing 164, Ireland showed promise early. Harry Tector top-scored with 40, while Ross Adair made 34 and Lorcan Tucker chipped in with 21. However, regular wickets stalled the chase and Ireland were bowled out for 143 in 19.5 overs.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers led the way, with Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana taking three wickets each, while Matheesha Pathirana picked up two.
Ireland will look to bounce back when they face Australia cricket team in their next Group B match on February 11.
