Turkey burgers recalled over Salmonella risk

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued an urgent recall for Hogan’s Farm Turkey Burgers due to potential salmonella contamination.

The affected product is a 400g pack bearing approval number IE 827 EC with a use-by date of July 26. Despite the expiry date having passed, the FSAI is warning consumers who may have frozen the burgers not to consume them.

Consumers are advised to check their freezers immediately and return any affected products. Recall notices will be displayed at retail outlets where the product was sold.

Salmonella infection can cause serious illness, with symptoms typically developing within 12 to 36 hours of consumption, though onset can range from six to 72 hours. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, headache, and abdominal cramps.

The FSAI emphasized that certain groups face higher risks from salmonella infection, including elderly people, young children, and those with compromised immune systems, who may experience more severe complications.

The food safety authority has not disclosed how the potential contamination was discovered or whether any illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products.

Consumers who have purchased the affected turkey burgers should not eat them and should return them to the point of purchase for a full refund, regardless of whether they still have their receipt.
