US-headquartered medical manufacturing equipment company Medtronic is expanding its R&D capabilities in Galway, hiring 200 new staff.
Medtronic employees over 3,000 staff in the Galway city with plants in Mervue and Parkmore, and is set to get even bigger as it expands to 200 new employees for Research and Development roles.
The new jobs are part of a €29.9 million ($30 million) investment in its business, the company says.
The move will see a major investment by the company, which already have bases in Dublin and Athlone, and significant growth in New Product Development and a new Global Laboratory Services team in Galway.
The global leader in medical technology, services, and solutions, Medtronic already employs more than 4,000 people across five sites in Galway, Dublin, and Athlone.
The 200 jobs will be in new product development and global laboratory services. Country director Gerard Kilcommins said they would help in the development of products and services in the areas of coronary care, heart valve and peripheral vascular disease, heart arrhythmia and pacing, hypertension, and spinal injury.
New hires will be able to work flexibly, however, they will be expected to be available to come onsite in Galway when necessary, said Ronan Rogers, senior R&D director at Medtronic Galway. He added that while new technology and ways of working have allowed for R&D professionals to do a certain amount of remote work, in-person sessions are preferred when it comes to innovation and collaboration.
