Vaccine booster shots to be given from next week in Ireland

The Covid vaccine booster shots will be administered to the vulnerable groups in the Republic from next week, confirmed the HSE. People eligible for the third dose can make appointments from Wednesday, HSE Chief Paul Reid said today.

The move comes after the reports that many people who are fully vaccinated got contracted with the virus including those from nursing homes across the country. There were also studies suggesting that the effect of vaccines decline after 90 days of the second dose.

The process of deciding vulnerable group was not an easy one, Mr. Reid told the RTE this morning. He also said it would take five to six weeks for the campaign to end and the HSE will contact those ‘vulnerable people’ to make appointments.

The campaign will be carried out through vaccination centers, hospitals, healthcare settings as well as GPs, he added.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly also confirmed the news and said the pop-up college vaccination centres will also become operational from next week.
