Global Temperatures Hit Record High for Tenth Consecutive Month

For the tenth month in a row, global temperatures have surged to unprecedented levels, marking a worrying trend that underscores the urgency of climate action. According to EU scientists, each month since June 2023 has surpassed its own record for being the hottest ever recorded. March 2024 has now etched its name in history as the warmest March on record, with an average surface air temperature of just over 14°C.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service’s findings reveal a concerning reality: global temperatures are soaring beyond previous benchmarks. March 2024 surpassed the previous high set in March 2016, with an average temperature exceeding the 1991-2020 average by 0.73°C. Even more alarming, the global average temperature for the past twelve months, from April 2023 to March 2024, hit an all-time high. It stands at 0.70°C above the 1991-2020 average and nearly 1.6°C above the pre-industrial levels of 1850-1900.

These soaring temperatures pose a grave threat to our planet’s delicate ecological balance. Despite international efforts, including the 1.5 degree target set by world leaders, the trajectory of global warming remains alarming. Even in Ireland, where temperatures are typically more moderate, data from Met Éireann confirms that last month’s mean air temperatures exceeded the Long Term Average for March.

As the Earth continues to experience record-breaking heat, it’s imperative that we prioritize decisive action to mitigate climate change. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to investing in renewable energy sources, collective efforts are crucial in safeguarding our planet for future generations.
