Grants to renovate unoccupied homes set to be increased

The Minister for Housing, Darragh O’brien, will present plans to Cabinet on Tuesday that call for increasing grants for renovating unoccupied homes.

This action, which will be paid for from the current housing budget, aims to address the growing cost of construction supplies.

Property owners are currently eligible for a subsidy of €30,000 to renovate an empty home.

There is a potential award of up to €50,000 for abandoned properties.

This funding programme will be expanded in May to cover residences constructed before 2007.

It now only applies to residences constructed prior to 1993.

The changes also make long-term rental homes eligible for funding.

The programme currently only applies to owner-occupied homes.

Additionally, Mr. O’Brien stated that the government is putting together policies to stimulate the construction of more affordable rental homes.

Increases in interest rates have made it difficult to finance these construction projects.

“What I want to do with colleagues is explore measures to bridge that viability gap,” Darragh O’Brien said.
