Katie Taylor defeats Argentine boxer in Wembley Arena

Katie Taylor defeated Argentine boxer Karen Elizabeth Carabajal on Saturday evening at Wembley Arena in London.

The Irish athlete triumphed in the tenth and final round.

Taylor’s lightweight IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO belts were all on the line in the mandatory defence.

Carabajal, 32, had previously won all 19 of her professional fights, but she had never competed outside of Argentina.

Taylor, 36, was her most difficult opponent to date. Taylor is now undefeated in 22 professional fights.

Speaking ahead of the bout, Taylor said: “To be honest I understand the challenge that’s ahead of me. There are no such things as easy fights at this stage. She has everything to gain in this fight and nothing to lose.

“These fighters are always very, very dangerous and I’m looking forward to showcase what I can do on Saturday night. My mindset is the same as it has ever been and I just love the sport. I still have the passion for my sport that I ever had and that’s where the motivation comes from.

Taylor paid tribute to her travelling fans who had made the trip to Wembley, adding: “They’re amazing. Thank you so much everyone.

“We want the fight at Croke Park, 80,000 people,” Taylor said in her post-fight interview. “Every single person here will want to be there. It will be the biggest event in women’s boxing history.””
