The Wonder, a new film set in the Irish Midlands in 1862, will be released globally on Netflix on November 16.
Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Gloria) of Chile is the director of the psychological thriller, which is based on the Emma Donoghue novel of the same name and stars Florence Pugh, Ciarán Hinds, Niamh Algar, Brán F O’Byrne, Elaine Cassidy, and her daughter, Kla Lord Cassidy.
The film, which has been described as a psychological thriller, is an adaptation of the 2016 novel of the same name by Emma Donaghue.
The cast also includes Tom Burke, Dermot Crowley, Toby Jones and David Wilmot.
The producers include the Dublin-based Element Pictures, which won an Oscar for its adaptation of Room by Emma Donoghue. Fis Éireann/Screen Ireland have supported The Wonder.
Director Lelio, who has written the screenplay alongside author Donoghue and Normal People’s Alice Birch, said: “Bringing the powerful novel The Wonder by Emma Donoghue to the screen not only offers me the chance to portray the collision between reason and faith, individual and community, obedience and rebellion, but also to explore my own interpretation of what a ‘period’ film can be.”
