New Procedure for Nurses Seeking Employment in Ireland

The Irish Nursing and Midwifery Board (NMBI) has reinstated a rule requiring nurses applying for employment in Ireland to demonstrate English language proficiency. Under the new process, nurses must provide proof of English proficiency, such as IELTS or OET certification, either with their initial application for the NMBI decision letter or within two months afterward.

Once the decision letter is issued, candidates can pursue employment after passing an aptitude test or adaptation. However, prior to registering with the NMBI, candidates must submit their English proficiency certificate along with their registration application.

Previously, hundreds of candidates faced barriers due to this policy. The change comes following persistent advocacy efforts by Shalbin Joseph, a member of the NMBI Registration Committee.
