Proposed Overhaul of Primary School Curriculum Emphasizes Early Sex Education and Reduced Focus on Religion

In a groundbreaking move, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) has unveiled draft proposals for a major revamp of the primary school curriculum. The suggested changes advocate for an early introduction of sex education, consent, and diverse family structures, marking a significant departure from the current curriculum. Additionally, there is a shift towards dedicating less time to religious studies. Dr. Patrick Sullivan from the NCCA emphasizes that the curriculum has not undergone substantial reform in the past 25 years and must adapt to the evolving global landscape. The proposals also include the introduction of foreign languages at the primary level, reflecting the changing dynamics post-Brexit. The NCCA has opened a consultation process seeking feedback on various curriculum areas, including arts education, modern foreign languages, primary language, science and technology, and social and environmental wellbeing, running until June 7th.
