For some data charges incurred in 2016 and 2017, refunds totaling more than €700,000 will be given to almost 55,000 users of the mobile phone service provider Meteor.
The communications regulator ComReg conducted an inquiry and found that Meteor had violated rules requiring it to inform users of out-of-bundle data prices at that time.
“Meteor has now taken certain remedial steps with regard to the breaches and has entered into a settlement agreement with ComReg,” the regulator said in a statement.
“As part of this settlement agreement, Meteor has agreed to refund certain out-of-bundle data charges that were incurred by approximately 55,000 customers during that period to the value of not less than €722,760,” ComReg said.
The parent company of Meteor, eir, declared in 2017 that the Meteor name will no longer be used as a standalone brand.
According to a statement on its website, each consumer would get an average refund of €13.02 per transaction.
“Active customers will be given a credit to their account”, eir said.
“In general, non-active customers will be provided with a unique barcode which they can use to claim their refund through Payzone in retail outlets,” the company added.
Customers will have 90 days to request refunds, and refunds will be processed by the end of July 2023.
