In a dispute over the implementation of many changes, including the recognition and remuneration of paramedics, SIPTU members of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) have consented to strike action.
95 percent of the participants in the poll, which was completed on Thursday, supported the proposal.
Although the course of action is not yet determined, options include a strike, a ban on overtime, or work to rule.
SIPTU members were informed on Friday by Ted Kenny, Sector Organiser of the Siptu Health Division that “We wish to advise that the count of the ballot papers for industrial action and strike action by our members in NAS (National Ambulance Service) took place this morning (Friday) and our members have voted by 95 per cent in favour of this action.”
In recent weeks, SIPTU informed the head of the NAS, Robert Morton of the action unless the reforms “which have been outstanding for some time” were implemented.
The plans call for graduated pay scales for paramedics and the need that all new paramedics hold degrees at least as high as level 8.
Next week, SIPTU will give the NAS a 21-day notice of the action, the details of which have not yet been determined, Mr. Kenny said.
