Boston Scientific to create over 400 jobs with €80m investment in Clonmel site

The US medical technology giant Boston Scientific has announced an €80m investment in its Clonmel site, which is expected to create more than 400 new jobs in Ireland within the next three years.

The funds will be used to increase production capacity and office space, and hiring has already started in a number of fields, including production, engineering, quality, supply chain, and R&D.

“Our growth in the region has been possible thanks to our talented workforce here in Clonmel,” said Conor Russell, Vice-President of Operations, Boston Scientific.

“Our team has worked to build strong manufacturing and R&D capabilities and also a high-performing and inclusive culture that we are proud to continue to foster as an employer of choice.”

The business already operates a Centre of Excellence for medical additives at the site where it has had a presence for 25 years.

Medical devices made there are used to help patients suffering from heart disease, neurological disorders, kidney stones and diseases of the pancreas, bile ducts and oesophagus.

As part of the investment, the plant is to be transitioned so that it sources more than 90% of its energy needs from renewables.

The investment has been supported by the Government through IDA Ireland.

“Boston Scientific in Ireland has transformed its activities over its 30 years here” said Mary Buckley, Executive Director with IDA Ireland.

“We welcome this investment in R&D and further manufacturing, which will offer new opportunities and careers in Tipperary and the region from the largest life sciences employer in Ireland.”

The company announced last year that it will add 40,000 square feet of new production space to its Galway location as part of a €100 million investment that might result in 300 new employment.

Since its establishment there in 1994, the multinational has employed well over 4,000 people in Galway.

The business said that it will spend €30 million, or 70 jobs, on its Cork location in 2021.

More than 6,500 people work for the firm at its three locations in Galway, Cork, and Clonmel.
