Hiqa welcomes new nursing home rules set to enhance resident protections

The Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) has endorsed new nursing home regulations coming into effect Monday, describing them as a “significant change” that will strengthen protections for residents.

These updated regulations aim to establish improved standards for resident visitor access and governance responsibility, particularly during crisis situations like pandemics. The changes represent a substantial shift in how nursing homes will be required to operate and be held accountable.

Hiqa officials emphasized that the regulations will create more robust governance frameworks while prioritizing residents’ rights to maintain family connections even during challenging circumstances. This comes following lessons learned during Covid-19 restrictions, when many nursing home residents experienced prolonged isolation from loved ones.

The new regulatory framework clearly defines responsibilities for nursing home operators and establishes specific protocols for maintaining visitor access during public health emergencies. Industry experts note that the changes reflect a more resident-centered approach to care facility management.

Healthcare advocates have welcomed the strengthened protections, while care providers prepare to implement the new requirements ahead of Monday’s implementation date.
