Housing starts down 31% in September

According to the most recent Department of Housing data, the number of residential units under construction fell last month.

In September, the Department received commencement notices for 2,211 units, a 31% decrease from the 3,203 commencements notified in the same month last year.

There were 605 units started in Dublin local authority areas and 1,219 in the greater Dublin area.

The Department of Housing also keeps a rolling 12-month total of commencements. In September, there were 27,417, a 10.2% decrease from the previous year.

These include 22,414 scheme units, which are down 11.3% year on year, and 5,003 single-family home starts, which are down 4.6% year on year.

The rolling 12-month measure of commencements has been declining since reaching a high of 34,846 in March.
