The Irish government is exploring plans to ease planning restrictions on cabins and modular homes in back gardens as part of efforts to address the housing crisis.

Minister of State John Cummins is reviewing potential exemptions in line with recent changes to planning laws.
Currently, homeowners can extend their properties by up to 40 square meters without planning permission. However, standalone structures of the same size require approval if they are not attached to the house itself.
The proposed changes aim to encourage “intergenerational movement” between the main house and smaller homes. However, structures exceeding 40 square meters would still require planning permission.
Before any decision is made, submissions will be sought from all Government departments, followed by a public consultation, meaning any changes are still some way off.
