In a progressive move, Ireland’s Minister of State for Enterprise, Neil Richmond, announced the introduction of a streamlined system enabling applicants to secure a general work permit and visa within just 20 days of applying for a job. The simplified one-year permit can be extended by employers. Recent data reveals a surge in work permit applications following the implementation of new legislation, with 5,366 applications received by the Enterprise Department last month. In-demand professions include nurses, healthcare assistants, chefs, computer programmers, and doctors. Despite an influx, Ireland faces a persistent shortage of skilled workers, prompting companies to seek foreign talent. Notably, the construction and financial service sectors have witnessed an uptick, drawn by increased minimum wages and other benefits in a booming Irish economy. Last year saw a notable influx, with 4,500 nurses and over 2,500 healthcare assistants joining the workforce. Ireland continues to grapple with a skills deficit amid robust economic growth.
