Ireland has secured its second gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, thanks to a stunning performance by Ciara Mageean in the women’s 1,500m race. Mageean, from Portaferry, Northern Ireland, clocked an impressive 4:04.66 to claim the top spot.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Mageean, who previously won bronze in the 2016 edition of the European Championships and silver in 2022. Determined to secure the gold this time, Mageean delivered an outstanding performance that left her competitors behind. France took the silver medal, while Spain secured the bronze.
Mageean’s success adds to Ireland’s growing medal tally at this year’s championships. Earlier in the competition, Ireland’s 4x400m mixed relay team also won gold, bringing the total number of gold medals for Ireland to two.
In the same 1,500m final, Ireland’s Sarah Healy also competed and finished in seventh place. Mageean’s victory is a proud moment for Ireland and highlights the country’s rising talent in athletics.
