According to The Journal, Ireland’s Covid-19 death toll has now exceeded 10,000, with the Health Service Executive (HSE) reporting 10,072 deaths linked to the virus since the pandemic began.
Official figures show an increase of 513 deaths since April, when the last comprehensive count stood at 9,559. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre continues to monitor and release weekly data on Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
The milestone comes as the Government announces plans to evaluate Ireland’s response during the peak pandemic years from January 2020 to February 2022. A recent expert steering group report, chaired by Professor Mary Horgan, praised Ireland’s pandemic response, noting that the country achieved among Europe’s lowest excess mortality rates and highest vaccination rates.
While Ireland continues to monitor the situation, the World Health Organization has recorded 7.1 million Covid-19-related deaths globally as of October 20. Officials note that while data on long Covid is not formally collected, anecdotal evidence suggests it remains a concern.
