An Irish woman who left Ireland eight years ago after the alleged double murder of two best friends has been arrested in South Africa.
Ruth Lawrence, 42, originally from Clontarf in North Dublin was at the centre of a global search and was arrested by police on Wednesday.
After Interpol issued a demand for her arrest, the 42-year-old lady was arrested yesterday in Bloemfontein by the Hawks, a priority crimes squad within South African police.
She was detained in connection with the murders of Eoin O’Connor and Anthony Keegan in 2014.
According to a Hawks statement, the force got information about the woman’s location in Bloemfontein on September 28. They followed up on the information, and she was caught in the Pellisier suburb.
Eoin O’Connor and Anthony Keegan, both from Coolock in Dublin, were last seen on 22 April 2014.
They had travelled from Dublin to Cavan but never returned, leading family members to become concerned.
Four days after they went missing, their car was discovered beside a lake in Westmeath.
On May 26, 2014, their remains were discovered near Inchicup island in Lough Sheelin, on the Cavan/Meath border. The two friends had been murdered.
According to South African authorities, the lady departed Ireland following the killings. She was scheduled to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
