New covid strain sweeps globe: What you need to know about XEC

A new Covid-19 variant is making waves across the world, with health officials on high alert. The XEC strain, first spotted in Germany, has now spread to 27 countries, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North America.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports that this highly contagious variant is behind about one in 10 Covid cases in the UK. With over 600 cases worldwide, experts fear it could become the dominant strain due to its numerous mutations.

Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal from the UKHSA warns of a slight uptick in Covid-related hospital admissions in recent weeks. He’s urging eligible individuals to get their winter booster jabs to stay protected.

The HSE’s Winter vaccination programme is in full swing, targeting those 60 and over, healthcare workers, pregnant women, and people with long-term health conditions. These groups are advised to get both flu and Covid-19 vaccines.

While there’s no need to panic, health officials stress the importance of staying vigilant. If you’re feeling under the weather with symptoms like a high temperature, cough, or fatigue, it’s best to limit contact with others, especially vulnerable individuals.

According to The Irish Mirror, the XEC variant shares symptoms with previous strains, including fever, continuous cough, loss of taste or smell, and shortness of breath. Other signs to watch for are body aches, headaches, sore throat, and gastrointestinal issues.

As we head into winter, experts remind us that other respiratory illnesses like flu and RSV will also be making the rounds. The message is clear: get vaccinated, stay alert, and take care of yourself and those around you.

Remember, while it’s no longer required to self-isolate with Covid, it’s still wise to play it safe if you’re feeling poorly. Stay home, rest up, and help keep your community healthy this winter season.
