A makeshift migrant camp along Dublin’s Grand Canal has been dismantled following a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies. Over 100 tents, housing male asylum seekers due to a lack of official accommodation, were removed. The individuals were informed of the illegality of their stay and provided with buses to official sites. Approximately 163 people have been relocated to Crooksling and the former Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum, where they’ll receive necessary amenities and support. The government emphasized the importance of a unified response to migration crises and vowed to prevent future encampments. While short-term measures like fencing off areas were implemented, a long-term strategy involving central coordination and utilization of empty state-owned sites is deemed crucial. Labor party leader Ivana Bacik welcomed the efforts but stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure humane conditions and security for asylum seekers and local communities.
