Three men injured and one arrested after caustic soda attack in Co Cork

Three men have been injured and one man has been arrested following a caustic soda attack in Co Cork yesterday.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident at around 8.40 pm on Connolly Road in Ballyphehane.

It is understood that the substance used in the attack was caustic soda, otherwise known as sodium hydroxide. 

This is a corrosive substance and can cause pain and burns on the skin.

Two men – aged in their 30s and 40s – were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. 

A third man (30s) was treated for his injuries at the scene yesterday.

A man, also aged in his 30s, was arrested after midnight. He is detained at Bridewell Garda Station under Section 4 of The Criminal Justice Act. 

Scenes of crime officers will examine the scene this morning. Gardaí said investigations are ongoing.
