The iconic Clarence Hotel in Dublin’s Temple Bar, long associated with rock stars Bono and The Edge, is poised for a significant transformation. New owners Keywell DAC are preparing to lodge planning applications to dramatically expand the hotel’s capacity, increasing room numbers from 58 to 162.
The ambitious renovation plan includes multiple extensions and refurbishments across the property. A six-storey extension will accommodate additional guest rooms, while the existing building will undergo comprehensive upgrades. The project will introduce new entertainment spaces, including a refurbished Octagon Bar, a stout bar, a contemporary music bar, and a live music venue.
The hotel’s ownership recently changed hands in a deal valued at approximately €355 million. Lifestyle Hospitality Capital (LHC) and Elliott Investment Management acquired a majority stake from Paddy McKillen Jnr and Matt Ryan, ending Bono and The Edge’s three-decade ownership of the property.
According to The Journal, despite the ownership change, the hotel continues to trade on its U2 connection, marketing itself as the “U2 Hotel” or “Bono Hotel” in Dublin. The total refurbishment will span 8,544 square metres, with plans to transform adjoining Dollard House and demolish Anne’s Bar to make way for the expansion.
This marks the latest chapter for a property that has previously seen ambitious expansion plans thwarted by economic challenges, including a €150 million Norman Foster design shelved during the 2008 recession.
