Up to 8,000 primary teachers won’t go back to school tomorrow, INTO says

INTO General Secretary John Boyle has confirmed, there will be close to 8,000 primary school teachers not returning to school tomorrow due to Covid-19 and there’s “not a hope we’ll have enough replacement teachers”,

Substitute teachers who are in their final two years in teaching colleges will be used to fill the gaps created by teachers ill with the virus or isolating but Mr Boyle said there’s “not a hope there will be enough spare teachers” to fill in and it’s inevitable that classes will be at home during this coming half-term.

“This is going to be an extremely difficult term up to mid-term and there will be situations where classes are at home.

Public health officials “apologised for their failures” at a “terse” meeting on December 22 but since then work has been done to make schools safer, Mr Boyle said.
