Urgent recall issued on popular tortilla chips due to ‘toxins’ that can cause adverse effects

Popular brands of tortilla chips have been widely recalled because they contain toxins that may have harmful effects on people.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has made public all the batch numbers involved and urges consumers to check their kitchens.

People who have purchased any of these items can return them to the store and receive a full refund if they have been affected.

The FSAI have said that batches of various brands of organic tortilla chips are being recalled due to the possible presence of tropane alkaloids.

Tropane alkaloids are naturally occurring toxins that can cause adverse effects in humans.

The statutory body explained that these adverse effects can include changes in heart rate, decreased salivary and sweat secretion, pupil dilation, dizziness, headache, and nausea.

Contamination of food can occur if parts (mostly seeds) of tropane alkaloid-containing plant species are unintentionally harvested with agricultural crops.

FSAI said that Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches.

Here is a list of the impacted batches as well.
