Western counties face afternoon of heavy rain and unseasonable strong winds

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for three western counties as heavy rain and unusually strong winds are set to batter the region this afternoon and evening.

The weather alert comes into effect at 2pm today for counties Galway, Mayo, and Kerry, continuing until 10pm as Ireland’s recent spell of unsettled weather persists.

Rapid Deterioration Expected

Conditions are forecast to deteriorate quickly from 2pm, with heavy downpours accompanied by very strong, gusty southerly winds described by forecasters as “unseasonable” for this time of year. The severe weather will particularly impact coastal regions where the strongest gusts are expected.

Temperature ranges will remain relatively cool, with highs between 13 and 18 degrees across the affected areas.

Travel and Safety Concerns

The national weather service has warned that the adverse conditions may lead to localized flooding, significantly reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, particularly on exposed routes and coastal roads.

The combination of intense rainfall and powerful winds raises particular concerns for outdoor activities and travel plans across the western seaboard during the afternoon and evening hours.

Marine Warnings Also Issued

Alongside the land-based weather alert, Met Éireann has issued two separate Status Yellow marine warnings for gale conditions affecting Ireland’s western and northern coastal waters.

The first marine warning covers the area from Valentia to Erris Head to Fair Head and will be active between 1pm and 10pm today. A second marine alert for the same coastal stretch will follow, running from 7pm today until 4am tomorrow morning.

These warnings indicate dangerous conditions for small craft and coastal activities, with mariners advised to avoid unnecessary sea travel during the warning periods.

Continuing Unsettled Pattern

The latest weather warning reflects Ireland’s ongoing pattern of unsettled conditions, with forecasters noting the persistence of changeable weather across the country. The western counties have borne the brunt of much of the recent severe weather, with Atlantic weather systems continuing to track across the region.

Residents and visitors in the affected counties are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak warning hours, and stay updated on the latest weather information as conditions develop throughout the day.
