Widespread Teacher Vacancies Across Ireland: Survey Reveals Over 800 Open Positions

In a concerning revelation, a recent survey conducted jointly by the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO), the Irish Primary Principals Network, and the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association has uncovered a staggering 800 teacher vacancies in schools across Ireland. This dire shortage of educators highlights a significant issue in the nation’s education system.

According to the survey’s findings, approximately 28% of schools nationwide are currently grappling with long-term teacher vacancies. Alarming disparities were found among various school types, with a staggering 50% vacancy rate in DEIS schools and Gaelsoileanna, and 43% in special schools.

The crisis appears to be most acute in the greater Dublin area, where over 500 of these vacant teaching positions are concentrated. This situation not only places an added burden on the existing teaching staff but also raises concerns about the quality of education being provided to students.

Education authorities and policymakers must address this issue promptly to ensure that students receive the quality education they deserve.
