‘117km/h in a 50km/h zone’: More than 600 drivers caught speeding by Gardaí in past 24 hours

As part of National Slow Down Day, over 600 drivers were caught speeding over the period of the last 24 hours.

GoSafe monitored the speed of 173,811 vehicles from 7 a.m. yesterday to 7 a.m. today.

In the course of these 24 hours, 628 vehicles were found to be driving faster than the posted speed limit.

Some notable instances include a motorist who was on the N6 in Baile An Phoill, Co. Galway, travelling at 117 km/h in a zone designated for 50 km/h.

On the N25 Ballyadam in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork, another driver was recorded travelling at 159 km/h in a zone designated for 100 km/h.

On the R513 in Herbertstown, Co. Limerick, a driver was seen going 115 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

These “motorists are putting themselves and others at risk,” the Garda have warned.

They have appealed to drivers to “comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads”.
