Fuel prices surge for third consecutive month, pressuring motorists

Fuel prices in Ireland have risen for the third month in a row, adding financial pressure on motorists as crude oil costs climb to a six-month high.

The ongoing increases reflect a challenging trend for drivers grappling with higher expenses at the pump. According to the January AA Ireland Fuel Survey, petrol prices rose by 2 cents per litre this month, bringing the average cost to €1.76 per litre.

Diesel prices saw an even steeper increase, with drivers paying an additional 3 cents per litre, pushing the average price to €1.73 per litre.

The surge in fuel costs is partly attributed to new regulations mandating an increase in the proportion of biofuels in petrol and diesel. These government-imposed measures, implemented at the start of this year, mark the fourth such hike in motor fuel costs over the past year.
