Budget 2025: Housing minister aims to slash landlord taxes again

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien is pushing for additional tax cuts for individual landlords in the upcoming Budget 2025, set to be announced on October 1. The move aims to further reduce what O’Brien describes as an “undue” tax burden on property owners who rent out their homes.

Last year’s budget introduced a tax relief measure allowing landlords to claim back up to €600 in the first year. However, O’Brien believes more needs to be done to support landlords and potentially stabilize the rental market.

“We made efforts last year, but the tax situation for individual landlords still needs to be looked at,” O’Brien stated. He emphasized his intention to advocate for further reductions in the next budget.

According to Irish Examiner, the proposal comes amidst ongoing debates about Ireland’s housing crisis and the balance between supporting property owners and ensuring affordable housing for renters. Critics argue that tax cuts for landlords may not necessarily translate to lower rents or increased housing availability.

As Budget 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on how the government plans to address the complex issues surrounding Ireland’s property market.
