Revenue officers have seized 864,000 cigarettes worth €613,000 at Dublin Port. The cigarettes illegally transited would cause a loss of €483,000 to the Exchequer and was discovered with the help of x-ray scanners.
They were hidden inside boxes checked in as railway sleepers on a vessel arrived from Rotterdam. Investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made yet.
In the recent weeks, the Revenue had seized huge quantities of illegal cigarettes tried to be trafficked through the ports. The Revenue appeal the pubic to help with information about smuggling to 1800 295 295.
