Ireland set for warm week as jet stream brings European heat

Ireland is experiencing a surge of warm weather this week, with temperatures expected to peak at 23 degrees on Friday as the jet stream draws heated air from continental Europe across the country.

Met Éireann forecaster Mark Bowe explained that the pleasant conditions are being driven by atmospheric patterns that are pulling warm continental air northward. “The reason behind all this pleasant weather is the jet, which is running just to our north helping to keep a big area of high pressure nestled to our south,” Bowe said during this morning’s forecast briefing.

The high-pressure system, positioned south of Ireland, has been circulating and “dragging some warm air from Europe up and over to us,” which explains why nights have been particularly warm and humid recently, according to the meteorologist.

Weekly Temperature Outlook

Today’s temperatures are forecast to reach between 19 and 21 degrees, with Tuesday and Wednesday potentially climbing to 22 degrees before Friday’s expected peak of 23 degrees. The warm spell is set to continue into the weekend, with temperatures remaining in the low twenties.

However, the same jet stream pattern responsible for the warm weather may also bring challenges. Bowe warned that the influx of very warm air expected by Friday “will bring the risk of unsettled weather over the weekend as well.”

Weekend Weather Uncertainty

While the week ahead promises mostly dry and fine conditions, Saturday and Sunday present a more mixed picture. Heavy rain showers are possible at times as the weather pattern shifts, though forecasters acknowledge that weekend predictions remain uncertain at this stage.

The contrast between the settled conditions expected through Friday and the potential for unsettled weather over the weekend reflects the dynamic nature of the atmospheric patterns currently affecting Ireland.

This warm spell comes as Ireland continues to experience the effects of shifting jet stream positions, which can dramatically influence both temperature and precipitation patterns across the country. The current setup has created ideal conditions for drawing warmth from continental Europe while maintaining generally stable weather through the working week.
