Leo Varadkar, the Prime Minister of Ireland, has announced his resignation following a special cabinet meeting this morning. In an emotional address, Varadkar cited personal and political reasons for his decision. He will also step down as the president and leader of the Fine Gael party.
Varadkar expressed satisfaction with his tenure as Prime Minister, highlighting his time in office as particularly rewarding. Despite his resignation, he expressed hope for the continuity of the current coalition government.
The process to elect a new Prime Minister will occur after the Fine Gael party’s annual conference in April. Until then, Varadkar will continue to serve in his position.
Varadkar, who became Prime Minister in June 2017, holds the distinction of being the youngest person to hold the position in Ireland. He represents the Dublin West constituency and is of Indian descent.
