The six proud women of Ireland made it to the final list of RTE’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2021 which comprises of eight nominees in total. Rachael Blackmore, Kellie Harrington, Ellen Keane, Cian Lynch, Leona Maguire, Jason Smyth, Katie Taylor and Vikki Wall are the nominees for the award and the winner will be announced through RTE One on 18th December.
Kellie Harrington became a prominent figure in Irish sports after bringing an Olympic Gold for boxing in the last Tokyo games.
Swimmer Ellen Keane also showed her talent and brought home a Gold from the Tokyo Paralympic Games in the SB8 100m breaststroke.
Jockey Rachael Blackmore had become the first woman to win the Aintree Grand National in last April.
The golfer Leona Maguire was in full swing this year and climbed to rank 43 from 177 after a mesmerizing show on the LPGA tour.
Professional boxer Katie Taylor has her second nomination to the award for a consecutive year. Taylor had also won the last year’s RTE Sportsperson of the Year.
Football star from Meath Vicky Wall’s nomination comes after her stunning performances which helped Meath to win first ever senior All-Ireland title. She was also the player of the match in the final.
The only two men in the list are hurler Cian Lynch and Olympic runner Jason Smyth.
Lynch had a good season who was also awarded the man-of-the-match performance in the All-Ireland hurling final.
Smyth also took gold at the Paralympics, winning his sixth gold medal in a thrilling T13 100m final.
