End Of An Era: Dublin’s Iconic Gutter Bookshop Changes Hands

Dublin’s beloved Gutter Bookshop, with its two iconic outlets in Temple Bar and Dalkey, is set to embark on a new chapter as it passes into the hands of Dubray Books. Founder and owner, Bob Johnston, who initially saw the venture as a “ten-year project,” has decided to step down after an incredibly successful 14-year journey.

In a heartfelt letter posted on The Gutter Bookshop’s website, Bob expressed gratitude for the accomplishment of his dream—to establish and sustain an independent bookshop amidst the rise of Amazon and digital books. The bookstore became a cherished part of Dublin’s literary community.

After purchasing the Temple Bar shop unit and weathering the challenges of the pandemic, Bob realized it was time to explore new passions. His first children’s picture book, ‘Our Big Day,’ celebrating marriage equality, received acclaim, but his heart longed for more creative pursuits.

In a mutually agreed transition with Dubray Books, Bob’s legacy and The Gutter brand will be preserved. The move marks the end of an era for The Gutter Bookshop, but Bob’s dedication to nurturing literary culture in Dublin will continue to shine.
As Bob “turns the page” to start anew, he leaves behind a rich legacy of literary excellence, gratitude for loyal customers, and a brighter future for Dublin’s book lovers.
